Gateway — a device that provides a transition or access.
Internet gateway
An Internet gateway is a network device (or server), the main purpose of which is to provide simultaneous access to the Internet to several network devices. Not to be confused with a network gateway (or router).
In fact, it is a software and hardware complex, sharpened for the distribution of the Internet. The simplest example is a regular WiFi router.
Internet gateways may have the following additional functions:
- Blocking access to unwanted sites.
- Shaping (speed limit).
- Organization of the demilitarized zone.
- Connection to a VPN server or the ability to configure the gateway as a VPN server.
- Logging and counting of used traffic with time and user-specific details.
Network gateway
Network gateway is a software for interfacing computer networks using different protocols. The network gateway converts protocols of one type of physical environment into protocols of another physical environment (network). For example, when connecting a local computer to the Internet, a network gateway is usually used.
When setting up a network in operating systems, as a rule, the default gateway (the main one) is specified — this is the network gateway to which all packets will be sent outside the local network, for example, to the Internet.
Payment gateway
The payment gateway is a technical solution that allows online business owners to accept payments on a website using bank cards and provides verification of customer data in the shortest possible time.
The payment gateway is the link between the site and the acquiring partner and is required for any type of payments via the Internet.
To ensure the secure transfer of payment information between the buyer, the online seller and the acquirer, the payment gateway protects the card data by encrypting the buyer's confidential data, such as the card number.
